Avalon Ballroom Concert 1966

$105.00

This poster is a 4th printing of the concert preformed June 22, 1966 by Big Brother and the Holding Company, including Janis Joplin. and Quicksilver Messenger Service at the The Avalon Ballroom. These were two of the most popular bands in San Francisco in the era along with the Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead. The poster is 14 inches by 20 inches which is typically the size poster used for posting all over the city advertising the show. In the 1960s at the Avalon Ballroom had two bands that performed two sets during the evening beginning at about nine o'clock. Many local bands, such as Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Steve Miller Band, served as backup bands. The main attraction was Big Brother and the Holding Company, which promoter Chet Helms organized around singer Janis Joplin in spring 1966. This poster is unusual because it was printed after the concert and was one of the first posters to pirate the image of a popular icon. Zig Zag was a very popular brand of cigarette rolling papers used in the era and Zig Zag Man was their trademark. The mythology of this was Chet Helms, promoter of the venue, was so upset by this poster he had his staff stamp "Genuine Counterfeit" on every poster they could find. This is a great piece of memorabilia!
